Bike Trains and Bike Pools for Commuting

Terms
Bike Train - regularly scheduled with fixed route, departure times and specific stops along the way to pickup and drop off passengers.
Bike Pool - Like a car pool for cyclists. Several cyclists agree to make the commute together. Route and departure times are more negotiable. Scheduled less frequently and are identified by start, destination, and day of the month.
I started doing these to relive the fun of Bike to Work Days year-round instead of once per year. My original post on the subject was on Sept. 7, 2007.
Trains and Pools
- I'm currently leading a Wednesday Bike Train from Candler Park to Georgia Tech. This arrives on campus in time for 9AM classes. I frequently ride with cyclists from Decatur and professors from Spelman, GSU, and GT as well as GT students.
- The Decatur/Midtown Bike Pool rode its inaugural ride Friday Nov. 17. This is shaping up to be a monthly commute from Decatur's Square into Midtown on the third Friday of each month. There are a few different routes, but each of them would leave 7:15-7:30AM and arrive in Midtown 30-45 minutes later.
Etiquette Stuff
- Beginners are welcome. We're doing this to spread the good word about how much fun it is to ride into the office.
- The routes are suitable for both in and out, but I've only got times listed for the inbound. I want to take one step at a time. Ask about riding back if you'd like company both ways.
- You can join or leave our train/pool at any spot. With the Train, it is easier to know when the train is coming by a particular point. With the pool, drop a note to someone who is riding so the group can look for you.
- Traffic laws are obeyed. Safety and Courtesy are good for everyone.
Discussion Forums for these routes
- Discussion on these routes has taken root on the SBL Commuting Routes Forum and is spreading to other forums such as Faster Mustache and atlbike.org.
